LLY EGR Delete Kit Detailed
Deleting the EGR of your vehicle is always a preferable choice over replacing it from time to time. It will lower the temperature of your engine, provide you with better fuel economy, and also, as an advantage, you may even get better horsepower too!
But don’t get your expectation too high to the sky right now. Deleting the EGR may give you some hassles too as your state’s laws don’t permit doing it. Are you confused by now? Don’t worry. We are hoping that by the end of this article, you will easily be able to decide what to do. Stay till the end.
What does LLY stand for on Duramax?
Basically, there is no connection between LLY and Duramax. You cannot break LLY down to Duramax in any way. LLY is just the RPO (Regular Production Code) code that refers to “Duramax Diesel Engine.” It’s similar in the way AN3 means ‘power front bucket seats’ and U2K means ‘satellite radio’.
Every time a Duramax diesel engine gets its upgrade, the RPO code changes. The first Duramax engine’s name or version was 6.6L LB7. Then it changed to 6.6L LLY. Afterward, the versions were named 6.6L LBZ, 6.6L LMM, 6.6L LGH, 6.6L LML, 6.6L L5P, and 3.0L LM2 respectively.
LLY EGR delete Benefits
LLY was the second generation Duramax engine. The first, LB7 didn’t have any proper emission system within it. LLY was thus the first in terms of emissions system containing the EGR. We all know what an EGR is, don’t we? There are plenty of benefits of deleting the EGR of your vehicle, namely-
It will increase fuel economy
The working process of EGR requires more fuel to keep your vehicle on road. EGR redirects the exhaust gasses back to your vehicle’s engine. That’s why the engine has to take more workload and it consumes more fuel.
If you remove the EGR system from the engine, the engine will get more breathing space. And then the engine will give better output with less fuel. Because the engine is now free from the workload of EGR.
It will potentially lower the temperature of your engine
The engine burns the exhaust gasses again when the EGR sends these gasses to the engine. In this way, the temperature within the Engine rises and becomes very hot. It will significantly harm the engine of your vehicle. So, it’s better to take the EGR off to keep your engine cooler.
Your vehicle’s engine will perform better
As we mentioned earlier, by having more breathing space, the engine will work more efficiently. Because it will no longer have to deal with the exhaust gasses sent back to it. So, if you remove the EGR valve from your engine, you will have the chance of getting better performance from the engine.
You won’t have to go to the mechanic frequently
The EGR valve is very likely to fall into failure. It is quite expensive to do the EGR-related repairs. And if you do not maintain the EGR properly, you are of no good having it. Due to the EGR, sometimes your engine will fall into problems too. Now it’s your choice. Either you protect your environment (as the politicians promise) or you protect your pocket.
LLY EGR Delete kit install process
Most probably, you will have a user manual with the 6.6L LLY EGR delete kit. The user manual will instruct you about the installation process. But if you don’t have any or if you unknowingly threw it in the bin, we are here for you. The installation process is briefly mentioned below-
# Step 1: Disconnect batteries
The first thing you need to do is to disconnect the batteries. It will protect you from any potential electric problem.
# Step 2: Drain coolant
After disconnecting the batteries, you have to drain the factory coolant. You will find disgusting soot over there just to find the necessity of draining it.
# Step 3: Remove the intake resonator by untying the hose clamp
You will have to remove the intake resonator after draining the coolant. You have to do it by slackening the hose clamp. After the hose clamp, you have to loosen up the support bolt too.
# Step 4: Untie the hose clamp and remove
After removing the intake resonator, you have to loosen hose clamps from the intake tube and remove them.
# Step 5: Remove zip files and pull wiring away from the intake manifold
Then you have to remove zip files and pull wiring away from the intake manifold to continue the process.
# Step 6: Remove the bolts
After removing zip files, you have to remove the 4 bolts holding the intake to EGR and also the 2 bolts to the intake crossover. Then you have to loosen the hose clamp on the boost tube and remove the intake manifold.
# Step 7: Remove PCV hose
In this step, you have to remove the PCV hose on the passenger side of the truck.
# Step 8: Remove the bolts on the exhaust side of the EGR cooler
After removing the PCV hose, you have to remove 4 bolts and nuts on the exhaust side of the EGR cooler.
# Step 9: Remove the bolts holding the EGR
Then you have to remove the 4 bolts and nuts holding the EGR to the motor. After the removal of bolts, you have to disconnect the hoses on the front and back of the cooler and then pull the entire EGR assembly up and out.
# Step 10: Pre-assemble the intake tube
After removing the EGR assembly, you have to pre-assemble the intake tube with the 2 blue anodized plates. You can use 3 short bolts and 1 long blot here.
# Step 11: Re-install the intake tube
Now, you have to re-install the intake tube with supplied stainless steel support bracket and nut to the long screw on the intake tube block-off plate. Make sure to reuse the factory bolt to mount the stainless steel bracket to the engine.
# Step 12: Install exhaust block-off plate using the bolts
After completing step 11, you have to install a polished stainless exhaust block-off plate using two 20mm and two 30mm bolts.
# Step 13: Install supplied hose in place of the factory EGR cooler
Then, you have to install the supplied hose from the firewall to the front of the motor. It must be installed in place of the factory EGR cooler.
# Step 14: Reinstall everything back on
Now, you have to re-assemble everything back on. Re-install the intake, boost tube, intake resonator, PCV hose, wires, etc. nicely as they were in the first place.
LLY EGR delete check engine light
Will EGR delete on your LLY Duramax cause of check engine light (CEL)? Well, it depends on your vehicle’s emission system. The common emission systems are-
- Federal Emissions (short form- FE9)
- Northeast Emissions (short form- NE1)
- California Emissions (short form- YF5)
If you have one of the FE9s, then most likely you won’t get any codes while unplugging. Even on 06/07 Classics, you can unplug the EGR and have no codes. But the rest in the list will throw CEL code. You may fix this problem using your Edge or inserting a finger stick.
LLY EGR delete kit y-bridge
What is a Y-bridge for LLY EGR delete kit? It is an intake kit for the LLY (2004.5-2005) Duramax. Generally, this kit is provided with the engine. Keeping the factory Y-bridge is not a good idea, however, even if you want to keep it, you can’t. Within a short period of time, the factory Y-bridge will blow apart.
The stock Y-bridge is structurally very weak. Under heavy load and boost, it won’t last long. So it’s better to replace it with an aftermarket one. You may replace the Y-bridge together with the EGR delete kit. Thus, you won’t have to open up your engine twice.
LLY EGR delete kit instructions
Deleting the emission system of a vehicle is never an easy task. To complete this task to perfection, you will have to follow several basic instructions. The LLY EGR delete instructions may be stated as follows-
Check the Package of your delete kit
Usually, any delete kit comes up with all the necessary tools and equipment you are going to need. But you should always check the package. It shall contain the following-
- 30mm long bolts (3)
- 20mm short bolts (5)
i. Two worm drive clamp (hose clamp)
- One 3/4″ × 17″ silicon hose
- One intake support bracket (304 SS)
- One M8 Nut
ii. One Billet Stainless exhaust block-off
iii. Two Billet EGR block-off plates with o-rings
Try to understand the disclaimers
Almost every delete kits will contain the following disclaimers-
i.Deleting the EGR will void your vehicle’s warranty
ii.You will have to use your deleted car only for the off-road purpose
Do not install the delete kit on a used vehicle
It won’t be a good idea to install the delete kit on your used vehicle. As the engine will be pretty hot by that time, you may seriously injure yourself by touching the parts of the engine. At least give one hour to the engine to cool off.
Follow the installation process precisely to get your job done
If you are comparatively familiar with your truck’s engine and fix the minor problems by yourself, then installing the LLY EGR delete kit won’t be a big issue. But you must have to follow the steps provided with the delete kit. Otherwise, you may fall into a world of problems. You don’t want that to happen, do you?
LLY EGR Delete tuner
As we previously mentioned, it depends on the emissions system you do have in your vehicle. If you have any emissions system other than the FE9, it will throw codes after the removal of the EGR. And you will need a tuner to get rid of this problem. What will a tuner do? It will modify the engine’s computer so that it functions properly.
Besides, you may even pass an ordinary police inspection if your vehicle functions properly and doesn’t throw codes frequently. There are many good tuners available in the market. You can buy one according to your need and budget.
LLY EGR delete pipe
Experts recommend installing the up pipes at the same time of installing the Y-bridge kit. There are two types of up pipes-
- Passenger side up-pipe
- Driver side up-pipe
The stock-up pipes are very vulnerable to failure. During heavy towing or boosting, there’s a high chance of the failure of those up pipes. The modification of up pipes is considered a very necessary one while removing the EGR of your vehicle or replacing the Y-bridge.
However, you should not use a blocker plate instead of new up pipes. The blocker plates will get destroyed after a while anyway. There are many aftermarkets up pipes available. Experts recommend the 2″ SS stainless up pipe. The stainless ones are very durable in this regard.
That’s why you should always consider buying an LLY EGR delete kit with the up pipe. It will relieve you from opening your vehicle’s engine more than once.
LLY EGR delete kit blocker plate
There’s an alternative to the EGR delete. You can install a blocker plate instead of removing the EGR of your vehicle. Well, you shall not do it if you are not on a tight budget. What does a blocker plate do? Its work process is pretty simple. You put it in the EGR valve and it blocks the exhaust gasses to get redirected to your vehicle’s engine. Sounds good, right? But it has some major disadvantages that may be stated as follows-
The blocker plate will be broken eventually
It doesn’t matter how durable the blocker plate you have is, it will be broken eventually. Because the blocker plate cannot hold the huge pressure of emission gasses. Over time, it will break, and remain within the EGR valve, which will create major problems for your vehicle’s engine in the long run.
Without a hole, the engine will throw an error code
Most of the time, the blocker plate needs a little hole inside it to dodge the engine’s computer. If you don’t do it, your vehicle’s engine will continuously throw error codes. And you must know how frustrating that is.
You won’t get the benefits of a full EGR delete
Bypassing anything won’t give you the full potential out of it, never. That’s why it is a bypass. After a full EGR delete, your vehicle will get more breathing space, you will get better fuel economy and most likely you are going to get a slightly better horsepower.
LLY EGR Cooler
The LLY Duramax has a bad reputation for overheating. You will find the tiniest radiator and fan in the LLY of the Duramax series. They are not enough to keep the temperature of your truck down. Though there are several other reasons for overheating your vehicle.
Air restrictions of the EGR are very severe and so the heat cannot come out. As a result, the engine remains hot. And if you pair your LLY Duramax truck with a heavy trailer or very hot temperature, most likely the stock cooling system won’t perform well. If you leave these temperature issues unchecked, it can result in serious problems in the long run.
Most of the time, the engine face overheating problems due to other common LLY issues. Facing head gaskets problem and water pump failure problem are the most common of them. You have to address these issues out before spending money on an aftermarket EGR cooler.
LLY EGR Valve
LLY has the first EGR among the Duramax models. The EGR system came up along with a stock cooler and EGR valve. What’s the function of an EGR valve? It determines when and how much exhaust gas is recirculated into the intake manifold. Because you don’t want to shoot hot exhaust air into the engine, do you? Though the EGR valve is supposed to control this matter, it fails frequently.
For this reason, you have to continuously go to repair shops. Or, you can simply remove the EGR system with an EGR delete kit. Though you may bypass the EGR system with a blocker plate, it is not recommended. If you have the budget, go for the full EGR delete.
LLY EGR delete problems
Why are you deleting the LLY EGR? For your benefits, right? Especially, to save some money. But deleting the EGR will also provide you with some problems that may be stated as follow.
It will void your vehicle’s warranty
Facing a hefty amount of fine due to passively supporting the removal of the emission system is the least your truck’s dealer wants. Besides, you may throw your engine into a world of trouble in the process of deleting the EGR. And trust me, none of the dealers will tolerate it. So, deleting the EGR will surely void your vehicle’s warranty. You have to keep that in your mind.
You have to use your truck only for the off-road purpose
In the United States, removing the emission system is only permitted for racing or competition purpose. That’s why you cannot use a deleted vehicle for street use. You have to use the deleted vehicle for the off-road purpose only. If you use your deleted truck on street anyway, you are most likely facing a huge amount of fines.
Error codes for not deleting with a tuner
Most of the trucks will require a tuner to keep your truck’s engine believing that everything is okay. Otherwise, the engine will constantly throw error codes. There are only a few old models out there that don’t require a tuner to keep everything under control. If you have one, you are a lucky man, mate!
Which is better- LB7 or LLY?
Why do manufacturers release a new version? To give something new to the consumers. Both LB7 and LLY have their advantages over one another. As there were no proper emissions systems in the LB7 (it had a catalytic converter), it has better fuel economy and it will give you more mileage than the LLY.
But the LLY is quieter than the LB7. This is a deal-breaker feature. Besides, EGR was first introduced to the LLY of the Duramax series. Thus you are getting a better emission system if you care about the environment. Though the LLY is a little bit sluggish until it is spooled, it has no turbo lags.
We have tried to state all the advantages and disadvantages of both the LB7 and LLY. Now, it’s your choice which one you are going to buy. But if you want us to recommend one, we will tell you to go for the LB7 for its more mileage and better fuel economy.

In 2021, yes. The MOT test (Ministry of Transport) is an annual test that is done to ensure vehicle safety. If you tamper with any emission part of your vehicle, and the MOT tester notices it, you are going to fail the test.
How many miles will an LLY Duramax last?
A typical 6.6L Duramax can easily hit the 350k miles provided with proper maintenance. Though they claim that the Duramax can hit up to 400k-500k, it is paperwork, right? And a Duramax will last that long only if you provide it with super good maintenance. However, due to the bad emission system, your LLY won’t last that much. You can expect to get 250k miles on average.
So, this was it for my review of Duramax EGR delete kits that are worthy of your investment. You will see a drastic improvement in your vehicle with any of them as they belong to some of the reputed motor part manufacturers. Though these are shown for EGR delete kit LLYDuramaxcompatibility, you can always check the fitment for your specific vehicle in Amazon Garage before you purchase.
The main bar against the EGR removal is the legality of it. It is purely illegal to remove any part of the vehicle’s emission system. But the laws aren’t much effective in all the states. If your state doesn’t care much about it, you can delete your truck without any hesitation.
Besides, for race and competition purposes, it’s legal to delete. But if your state is strict to the laws, then you may think twice before deleting the EGR. Hope you’ve made your decision at this point. If you have any further questions, leave them in the comment box.
